Grand Junction ColoradoGrand Junction, Colorado is a city of about 50,000 people on the far western edge of the state. It resides on Interstate 70 in a long expanse of rugged terrain carved out by the Colorado River. This area is home to Colorado's Wine Country because of its plentiful orchards and wineries. Breathtaking valleys and twisting canyons filled with unique red rock formations make the area a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The region has fair, sunny weather and blue skies nearly every day. At the Colorado National Monument less than 20 miles west, almost 40 miles of trails are available for hiking and rock climbing on the cliffs is allowed. Camping is permitted in the park's designated campground and in the back country as well. A multitude of winding bike trails makes this region a mountain biking paradise. Whitewater rafting can be arranged with experienced river guides or rafters can set out on their own with a permit. Skiing at the Powderhorn Mountain Resort, less than an hour from town, is perfect for beginning and intermediate skiers. Visitors can also enjoy less extreme activities. Golfers can play at two public courses, Lincoln Park and Tiara Rado. At the John McConnell Math and Science Center, children can explore numerous hands-on science and engineering activities. Children also can learn more about science at the Dinosaur Discovery Center, through fossils, robotic dinosaurs and interactive exhibits. Sightseers can shop at downtown boutiques, visit several art galleries and attend the Avalon Theatre for movies and live performances. Adults can participate at wine tasting at almost 20 wineries in the area.
