This state is the most populous of all the fifty states. The capital is in Sacramento. There are eight major cities, two of which are in the top four metropolitan size areas of the United States, Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area.
California is famous for many things. It is the home of Hollywood and the American movie industry. It is also the home of Disneyland, which attracts millions of visitors to California, and the United States, every year.
California has every possible type of geological feature. It is also home to some of America’s most beautiful national parks. From giant valleys in the north, to deserts in the south and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, there is much to see and enjoy when visiting California.
For more than one hundred years, California was claimed by Spain. For a period of time, California was part of Mexico as a result of Mexico’s gaining independence from Spain. Eventually, and after the Mexican – American War, California became a territory, eventually becoming a state in 1850. California is famous for the California Gold Rush that quickly populated the centre of the state in the mid 19th century.
The major industries in California are entertainment, hi-tech development and electronics and tourism. The people of the state are generally considered very liberal. Many fads in dress and food start in the state of California. There are areas in Los Angeles with some of the most streets for shopping in the world. California is also famous for excellent wines, grown mostly in the Napa Valley
Californian’s love Mexican food, the same type as found in Texas. They enjoy their beaches and mountains, as well as golf, hiking and camping. There are more than twenty winter sport areas in California that attract many tourists all year long.
