Located in the heart of the deep south, Louisiana has a rich and colorful history. In 1662, a French explorer found the mouth of the mighty Mississippi and claimed the land drained by the great river and its tributaries. Although Spanish Explorers had found the territoy more than a century easlier, the French claimed the land in the name of King Louis XIV. After being passed back and forth between the powers of Spain and France, Napoleon finally sold it to the U.S. in 1803. The state still retains a French flair.
Louisiana joined the confederacy during the Civil War. The state’s economy floundered during Reconstruction, but bounced back with the discovery of oil and gas early in the 20th century.The people suffered another major economic set-back under the wrath of Katrina in 2005.
Louisiana once again is strong and thriving,a leader in the production of petroleum, natural gas, salt and sulfur. The state also proudly hosts millions of tourists annually.
New Orleans and its picturesque French Quarter is one of the most popular destinations in the United States. The Mardi Gras celebration during February has been held annually since 1838. The celebration is popular worldwide,drawing throngs of visitors. New Orleans is also a popular resort and convention city the year around. People enjoy local Cajun cuisine, casinos, Bourbon Street and live Jazz music. The famous Super-dome here hosts great sporting events and more.
Shreveport is another popular convention and tourist destination with its casinos and popular Cinco de Mayo celebration in May. Visitors flock to Lake Charles for year around fishing and hunting or serene golf greens. There is no shortage of live music in trendy night clubs and restaurants with the ever popular Cajun Cuisine.
Other places of interest in New Orleans include historic plantation homes to tour around Natchitoches and New Iberia. Baton Rouge is the state capital. It is a thriving city with lively music, great restaurants, and some of the state’s best shopping.
